「神津荒船もみじ祭り」は、昨日（10月19日）、開催されました。一面の紅葉となるにはまだ早く、牧場では朝から肌寒くて午後には小雨も降る中でしたが、600名以上の多くの方々にご来場いただきました。
下仁田町観光協会（共催）と役場の皆様には、日曜日にも関わらず運営をお手伝いいただきました。

今後も、イベント等のいろいろな機会、チャンネルを通じて、神津牧場の魅力をお伝えします。
◇駐車場から会場へ
駐車場からすぐの総合案内で受付、（自賛ですが）濃厚でまろやか、風味豊かな神津牧場牛乳の無料券が配布されました。ジャージ雌牛10頭ほどが、近くの草地で草を食んでおり、この日は特別に放牧地解放でした。牧場には400ha近い敷地に100haほどの草地があり、草地には採草地と放牧地があります。放牧地もたくさんに分けられ、春から秋には半日おきにローテーションで利用しています。今回はそのうち近いところで、人に特によく馴れた雌牛が放牧されました。行きか、帰りかに寄られた方が多かったかと思います。なつっこい牛にスリスリされたり…。
のぼり旗に沿って坂を下り、小橋に差し掛かる頃、正面の石垣に見えたのが「神津牧場」の銘板です。これだけでも牧場の長い歴史が感じられたことでしょう。橋を渡って右手、スロープを下りた小川のそばには、カッパがいましたか？カッパにエサをあげた方、いらっしゃいませんよね。
そして、踏み込み消毒の後、会場の中心へ。
◇お楽しみコーナー
牧場にはジャージ牛の他、ヤギ、ヒツジ、ウサギもいます。こうした動物とのふれあいや、おさんぽをしました。子牛の体重当てクイズは、なかなか難しかったでしょう！？普段から見ているものではありませんので。それだけに近い体重を当てた方はスゴイ！です。
うん…！？ 324名？…えっ、そんなに！？すごっ！！！
牧場では、夏場に採草地で草を刈り取り、丸い大きなかたまりに集めてラッピングしたロールベールを保存し、冬場に牛へ与えます。このロールベールへのお絵かき（らくがき）もありました。白い無地のキャンパスに自由に描けます。お子さんの他、大人の方々も存分に楽しまれたようです。
◇体験コーナー
バターづくり体験はチャーニングがたいへんで、これがまた楽しくて…、でしたね。乳しぼり体験も人気でした。牛の体温を感じながら自分の手で触ってしぼってみたことは、貴重な経験だったことでしょう。乗馬体験は、ポニーの体調により、無理をさせないよう、内容を変更しながら行いました。引き馬体験は午前の10名ほどで終了、午後には無料にて、ポニーを立たせたまま、小さなお子さん限定で馬上写真体験を行いました。想い出に残る写真となりましたか？
焼きごてで作る木製プレートでは、牧場名の入ったこてを炭火で熱し、のこぎりを挽いて輪切りにした木に焼き印を付けました。秋を感じさせる焼き芋付きでした。
◇お食事コーナー
メニューは、ジャージー牛肉を使ったハンバーグ、肉うどん、カレー等（食堂）、ヒレ、サーロイン定食等（鉄板焼きコーナー）でした。牛は青々とした草を食べ、広い草地で伸び伸びと育ちます。山地での放牧は筋肉を鍛えて赤身が、また、おいしさ・機能性成分が多くなります。鉄板ではこのお肉を、いつも通りゴールデンバターで焼きました。そうです、黄色が引き立つバターです。これを使ったバターご飯は、日頃から「鉄板」の人気メニューです。食堂の人気はハンバーグ。昨日も同じであったようです。
新鮮牛乳のおいしさがそのまま詰まったソフトクリームは、天候にあまり影響されなかったようです。何年も務める東の横綱の風格で、まさに不動の人気でした。
◇ミートの広場
「広場ってどこ？」と思われたかもしれませんが、場所は売店前広場の横、「鉄板」建物の軒先でした。炭火を使ったジャージー牛肉の串焼きとウィンナー（フランクフルト、ブラートヴルストとも）は平常通りの出品で、ニクニクしさ、食べ応えを味わっていただけたと思います。炭火のため、すぐにお出しできないことも多くありましたが、どうぞご容赦ください。久々にメニューに煮込みが加わりました。数年ぶりに牧場にいらした方々から、しばしばご要望いただいていたものです。寒かった早い時間帯ほど好評でした。
◇売店前広場テント
芋の子汁、玉こん、焼きそば、プリン等が出品されました。御汁は下仁田ネギ入りでバリューアップした上、寒い中で、やはりほっとしていただける一品だったでしょう。プリンは牧場職員開発メニューです。完売でした。同シェフによる「本日のデザート」は、牧場で週末・休日に数量限定の上、販売されます。どうぞお早めに。
関東天文協会神津牧場天文台があります。街の灯りから遠い牧場の環境が天文観測に適しており、プロ級の方々が長年にわたり活動されています。牧場のイベントにもご参加いただいており、食堂の壁には天体写真が展示されています。今回は太陽観察ができる天体望遠鏡と雨天でも実施可能な植物等の観察用顕微鏡を使って観察会が行われ、多くの方々が関心を持たれたようです。
下仁田町の有名ラーメン店、一番さんが初出店して下さいました。餃子のタレは牧場の乳製品を使用した特性でした。好評ぶりは店名の通りで、広場を横切る行列が絶えませんでした。
◇ハイキングおつかれさまサービス
ジオパーク下仁田協議会主催にて、牧場発着、紅葉の神津牧場・物見山ツアー！が行われました。地すべり地形を利用した牧場にいる様々な生き物や、分水嶺でもある物見山を含む県境の峠道を古くから信州－関東間で往来した歴史などを認定ガイドさんに教わりながら、半日のハイキング。ソフトクリーム進呈。このツアー以外にも、多くの方々が物見山、荒船山へと散策されました。牧場展望台ハイキングもありました。120人を超える方々が体験なさったようです。片道20分ほどですが、脚が疲れなかった、息も上がらなかったという方は、日頃から鍛えられているのでしょう。ジャージー牛のように？ 時折、展望台にある鐘の音が広場にも響いていました。のむヨーグルト進呈。

The Kozu–Arafune Autumn Foliage Festival was held yesterday (October 19).
The leaves including those of Japanese maple, were still a little early for full autumn colors, and the day was chilly from the morning with some light rain in the afternoon.
Even so, more than 600 visitors came to the event.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended, to the members of the Shimonita Town Tourism Association (co-host) and the town office who assisted us despite it being a Sunday, and to all those who participated as vendors.
We will continue to share the many charms of Kozu Ranch through various events and opportunities.
From the Parking Area to the Venue
Right near the parking area, visitors checked in at the information booth, where we distributed complimentary tickets for our rich, mellow, and wonderfully flavorful Jersey milk (if we may say so ourselves!).
About ten Jersey cows were grazing in a nearby pasture, and for this special day, the grazing area was opened to visitors. Kozu Ranch has nearly 400 hectares of land, including about 100 hectares of grassland made up of hayfields and grazing paddocks. The grazing areas are divided into many sections and used in a half-day rotation from spring to autumn. This time, we chose a nearby paddock with gentle, people-friendly cows. Many visitors stopped by either on their way in or out—some even got nuzzled by the friendly cows.
Following the flags down the slope, you would reach a small bridge. On the stone wall ahead, the “Kozu Ranch” nameplate came into view—a reminder of our ranch’s long history.
Across the bridge on the right, down the slope beside the stream… did you spot the kappa? We hope no one tried feeding it!
After the disinfectant footbath, visitors entered the main event area.
Fun Activities
Besides our Jersey cattle, the ranch is home to goats, sheep, and rabbits. Visitors enjoyed interacting with these animals and taking them for short walks.
Guessing the weight of a calf was quite a challenge—most people don’t see young cattle up close every day!
Those who came close deserve real praise.
Wait… 324 participants? Really? That many? Amazing!
In summer, we harvest grass from the hayfields and wrap it into large round bales for winter feed. At the event, children—and many adults—enjoyed drawing on these wrapped bales as if on a giant white canvas.
Hands-on Experiences
Making butter was hard work but great fun—everyone enjoyed the churning process.
The milking experience was also very popular; feeling the cow’s warmth and actually milking with your own hands must have been unforgettable.
Due to the pony’s condition, we adjusted the horseback riding program to avoid overexertion. The guided rides ended in the morning after about ten participants; in the afternoon we offered free photo sessions for small children, taken while seated on the pony. We hope the photos became a cherished memory.
Our wood-branding activity used branding irons with the ranch name, heated over charcoal, and pressed onto wooden discs cut from logs. This came with roasted sweet potatoes—an autumn treat.
Food Corner
At the restaurant, we served hamburg steak, beef udon, and curry etc. made with Jersey beef.
At the Teppan Grill, we offered fillet and sirloin set meals. Our cattle grow on fresh green grass and roam freely over spacious mountain pastures. Mountain grazing strengthens the muscles, enriches the lean meat, and boosts its flavor and functional components.
As always, the meat on the Teppan was cooked in our signature Golden Butter, whose bright golden color stands out beautifully. Butter rice made with this butter remains one of our most popular dishes.
At the restaurant, the hamburg steak was—unsurprisingly—the top favorite again this year.
Our soft-serve ice cream, or soft cream shortly, made from the fresh taste of Jersey milk, was as popular as ever, hardly affected by the weather. It truly carried the dignity of a long-standing “East Champion” of Sumo—our all-time bestseller.
Meat Plaza
You may have wondered, “Where is the plaza?” It was located next to the store-front square, under the eaves of the Teppan building.
We served our usual charcoal-grilled Jersey beef skewers and frankfurters (a.k.a. bratwurst). Their hearty flavor and satisfying bite were enjoyed by many.
Because we grilled over charcoal, there were times when food wasn’t ready immediately; thank you for your patience.
For the first time in several years, we brought back our simmered beef stew—a dish many returning visitors had been requesting. It was especially popular during the chilly early hours.
Tent Area in Front of the Store
We offered dishes such as imono-ko jiru (potato and vegetable soup), tama-konnyaku, yakisoba, and pudding.
The soup—enhanced with Shimonita Negi or green onions—was a comforting treat in the cold weather.
Our pudding, developed by the staff, completely sold out. The same chef’s “Dessert of the Day” is available on weekends and holidays in limited quantities—please come early.
The Kozu Daily Farm Astronomical Observatory belongs to the Kanto Astronomical Association. The ranch’s dark-sky environment, far from city lights, provides excellent conditions for astronomical observation, and expert members have been active here for many years. Their celestial photographs are displayed on the restaurant walls.
This time, they held an observation session using both a solar telescope and microscopes (for plants, usable even in rain). Many visitors showed great interest.
Shimonita’s famous ramen shop Ichiban joined us for the first time. Their gyoza dipping sauce was specially made using our dairy products. True to their name, their popularity was number one—the line stretched across the plaza all day.
“Good Job, Hikers!” Service
The Shimonita Geopark hosted a guided half-day hiking tour starting and ending at the ranch:
a walk through the autumn-colored Kozu Dairy Farm–Mt. Monomiyama area. Participants learned from certified guides about the many creatures living on the landslide-formed terrain of the ranch, and about the old mountain pass on the prefectural border—once a key route between Shinshu and the Kanto region.
Soft cream was provided to participants.
Many other visitors also hiked Mt. Monomiyama or Mt. Arafune.
More than 120 people hiked to the observation deck alone. It takes about 20 minutes one way, but those who said they weren’t tired or out of breath must be in great shape—just like our Jersey cows!
From time to time, the sound of the bell at the observation deck echoed across the plaza.
Drinkable yogurt was also offered.
